Newry Three-Day start list; changes in format to spice-up action

One of Ireland's most exciting stage races is down for decision this weekend with Newry Wheelers promoting their ever-popular three-day.

Jake Gray of the Nicolas Roche Performance Team is back to defend his title and he’ll have Marc Heaney and Cameron McIntyre around him for support.

The talented junior won the race in heroic circumstances last year and with number one on his back this time around he’ll be impossible to ignore.

There’s a great field assembled for it once again, with riders coming from all over the country.

And as well as fighting for the Spin 11-sponsored yellow jersey there’s the Chain Reaction-sponsored points jersey, the PKF-FPM-sponsored KOH jersey as well as jerseys for the best junior and team.

The action gets underway tomorrow evening with a 56-kilometre stage and one major climb less than 10 kilometres before the finish.

Saturday sees the riders tackle a 103-kilometre road race with two big climbs before Sunday’s final showdown where a 118-kilometre journey –and three climbs will complete the weekend’s action.

Two interesting aspects of the race are there is no time-trial this year and there are time bonuses at the end of stages as well as throughout at predetermined points.

Given how closely-packed the GC was last year, it promises to be one heck of a battle.
