Newry Three Day stage 1 stopped and neutralised

The opening stage of the Newry Three Day stage race was neutralised on Friday evening after a collision on the course.

Stickybottle understands no riders were injured and that none of the competitors was involved in the crash.

Instead two vehicles collided on a section of the course the riders were racing in the direction of.

And because the collision was in the race’s path, the event had to be stopped on the Warrenpoint circuit.

A decision was then taken, in the interests of safety, to neutralise the racing for the evening.

However, the race will proceed as planned tomorrow for the 128.5km stage 2 with the Rathfriland finish.

Before the crash, climbers' points had been scored and intermediate sprints contested.

As a result, climbers' and points jerseys were expected to be awarded. Those details were due to be confirmed late on Friday night.

The race was won last year by Ben Walsh. He claimed the opening stage and kept the yellow jersey all the way.
