Cycling Ireland has appointed a new youth development officer for Ulster and launched a new national road race series for youth riders, which will be fought out over three rounds in the months ahead.

There will be two rounds in June and one in July, with racing for the U16 category only, but with separate events for boys and girls.

"Research evidence overwhelmingly supports the notion that the formative years are crucial for nurturing talent and instilling a passion for sport," said Michael Black, Cycling Ireland's high performance development coach.

"By providing a structured platform for competition at this critical stage, we aim to cultivate a vibrant cycling culture and unearth promising young athletes.”

"The introduction of the series aligns seamlessly with our overarching strategy for pathway activity within the sport. We recognise the importance of a well-defined progression from youth and junior categories to U23 and eventually senior ranks.

"This series serves as a vital launchpad in this journey, offering young cyclists the opportunity to hone their skills, gain valuable race experience, and transition smoothly through the ranks as they pursue excellence at the highest levels.”

Black added U14 riders have not been included in the series because "this age group should primarily focus on skill development rather than intense competitive pressures".

The Youth National Road Series rounds are also follows:

  • Round 1: June 8th - Sean Nolan Meath GP Youths
  • Round 2: June 30th - Sliabh Luachra Classic
  • Round 3: July 27th - Jimmy Watson and Debbie Barclay Perpetual Cups

Cycling Ireland has also announced the appointment of former British pro rider, Stuart Balfour, as youth development officer for Ulster. His post is funded by Sport Northern Ireland.

He will be responsible for "supporting and increasing Cycling Ireland youth membership and youth-junior participation in Ulster". He will work with the Cycling Ireland youth commission, Cycling Ulster, and affiliated cycling clubs within Ulster to drive participation in youth cycling activities, initiatives, and events.

“I’m really looking forward to getting started in the new role with Cycling Ireland and getting to know everyone in the cycling community and settling into life over here," Balfour said. "It’s been great meeting people already who are so keen about cycling in the area."
