These new signs marking the precise start and finish of Strava segments have been popping up in Ireland.

New Strava signs are popping up on Irish roadsides marking segments so riders know exactly where to go flat out.

The signs, which have appeared at the side of the road to mark and start and end of at least three climbs.

The initiative has been put in place by clare-get-sidetracked.ie; the recreation brand of Clare County Council.

The signs have been erected to mark the start of finish of Corkscrew Hill, Castle Hill and the Meggagh Valley climb.

The signs have an integrated near field communication (NFC) chip. It allows cyclists with an NFC-enabled smartphone to touch the sign with their phones.

The Strava website segment page opens on the phone, allowing riders to instantly compare their times with others and to upload their own times.

Eoin Hogan, the rural recreation officer for county Clare is the manager of the project and believes the signs will added to the cycling experience in the area.

“Cyclists will be able to get detailed information in advance of tackling a hill,” he said.

“And they will also be able to challenge themselves to see how their times compare to the fastest attempts on the hills.”

Let us what you think. A great concept that should be expanded or the unnecessary introduction of a competitive edge to cycling in the countryside?
