Video - Florian Lipowitz crashes out of Tour de France during flat-out TT

Florian Lipowitz is out of the Tour de France, while 5th overall and a year after finishing 3rd on the final general classification

Florian Lipowitz, the German rider who finished 3rd overall at the Tour de France last year, has crashed out of the 2026 edition during the stage 16 TT after overshooting a right hander.

The Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe rider looked like he was on for a very strong performance in the 26.1km TT from Évian-les-Bains to Thonon-les-Bains.

He was just three seconds off the leading rider at the time, Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), when he overshot the corner and came down very heavily.

The German was 5th overall setting out on his TT today, just 50 seconds off 3rd placed overall, Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG).

Race leader, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates XRG) very nearly came down on the same corner, video below, but just about managed to stay upright.

Just 48 hours after Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) crashed out of the race, with a broken collarbone, Lipowitz was also cluthing his arm in a manner that suggested the same injury.

He slammed onto the road hard, and then slid across the tarmac before hitting padded crowd control barriers on the pavement. He also appeared to hit the back of his head on the kerb as he slid up onto the foot path.
