Video - Rubio gets 20 sticthes to face after hitting UAE car at Tour

Einer Eubio, like Ben Healy, had been on the rampage with attacks at the Tour for most of the past week, but he was sent out of the race in awful circumstances today

Einer Rubio (Movistar) is out of the Tour de France, just two days from Paris, after a horrible incident on Alpe d'Huez today left the Colombian with approximately 20 stitches to his face.

He had been in the breakaway when he was passed by race leader Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) as he was monstering up the climbing, catching the 14 riders ahead and winning in record time.

However, just as Rubio was passed by both Pogačar and his team car, they all reached an especially congested section of road, with fans absolutely packed into both sides of the road.

As a commissaire's car passed, a fan fell or was pushed into the road, causing the UAE Team Emirates-XRG car to jam on to avoid hitting him.

But Rubio was right behind that vehicle, crashing into it face-first. He was left stunned on the ground as spectators helped him to his feet.

He was forced out of the race. After the stage he received medical attention, including the stitches to his face, before being taken by helicopter to Grenoble.

“Einer Rubio has received around 20 stitches in the face following the accident he suffered during the ascent to Alpe d'Huez," Movistar later confirmed in a statement.

"The Colombian is to be transferred to a hospital in Grenoble, where new tests will be carried out to determine the extent of the injuries."

Thankfully, no broken bones were diagnosed during the medical checks. However, it was horrendous to see Rubio leaving the race with a heavily bandaged face.
