Luke Smith and Mark Dowling fight it out for 'Bidwell' win

Luke Smith (Moynalty CC) was won the Peter Bidwell Memorial in Donore, Co Meath, adding his result this evening to his victory at the recent Glendale Grand Prix.

In the Jons Drogheda Wheelers promotion this evening, Saturday, Smith was among a nine-man breakaway that forged clear around the halfway point in the race.

The senior event was run over eight laps of the usual 6.4km circuit incorporating Donore village, with the Leinster Youth Road Race Championships also part of the promotion.

Though the senior race breakaway spent a large chunk of the race with a gap that the chasing bunch might have closed, they made it all the way to fight it out for the spoils.

Smith and Mark Dowling (VeloRevolution-SpeedQueen) emerged best from the late exchanges, finishing just a few lengths ahead of the rest of the breakaway men.

And though Dowling has won this race twice before, the first time 15 years ago, he had to be content with 2nd today as Smith got the better of him in the sprint after a short and sharp contest.

Tadhg Killeen (Kilcullen CC Murphy Geospatial) rounded out the podium on the night, after just holding off a very fast-finishing Christopher Marshall (Velo Performance).
