New race is Ireland's richest one-day; will also be shown on TV

Crit racing has seen a steady upsurge in interest over the last number of years and as well as more and more clubs promoting them, more and more sponsors are coming on board to back them and front up with some very decent prize-money (Photo: Michael Meade)

Following the news that major car dealers SEAT would be generously backing a seven-crit series in the North this summer, news of another big-money criterium has emerged in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, in a little over two weeks.

The ‘Destination Sport Mullingar Criterium’ promoted by Lakeside Wheelers and Grange Motors Toyota will be held in the town’s centre on Friday June 19th.

First prize in the feature A1-A2 event is a very tidy sum of €500.

The race, which will be screened online at IrishTV.ie, will be held on the same circuit the National Criterium championships in 2011 and 2012.

Those interested in competing should get entries in as soon as possible as only 50 riders are permitted to take part.

In total, the prize fund exceeds €2,000 and there are prizes for the first 10 over the line, which is generous in itself.

Preceding the main event is a separate A3 race which will also be restricted to 50 riders. Top prize here is €250.

The support race starts at 7pm sharp and riders will race for 45 minutes and three laps of a 1.1 kilometre circuit while the A1-A2 race starts at 8pm and follows a similar format.

Registration is open here and entry is €20.
