One of the newest teams on the Irish domestic racing scene is dreaming big for 2013 and they’ve already set their sights on a stage win in one of the country’s biggest races.

Planet Tri, the brainchild of former Blarney CC man Patsy Crowley and Killaloe-based bike retailer Cathal Murphy, launched their 2013 roster last weekend in the Co Clare town and boldly claimed a stage win in the Kerry Group Rás Mumhan as their goal for the early part of the new season.

Crowley has left no stone unturned in putting a strong line-up in place to challenge for that goal and at the weekend he said his charges were in fine shape, with just days to go to the start of the new season.

“The lads are all in good shape now and all trained last weekend in Clare. The weather wasn’t very kind to us but we still racked up some good miles and are looking forward to the Lacey Cup on the 24th, and a few will be heading to Monasterevin this weekend,” he explained.

Indeed, in the A1/A2 category the team won’t have the luxury of having a large team but what they lack in quantity they’ll make up for in quality with Mick Storan, Eddie Barry and Paidi O’Brien.

All three rode with different teams last year but such is the ever-changing nature of the sport and the composition of teams, when plans were in their infancy for the team Crowley saw a good opportunity for the trio.

“They’re all different types of riders, if you like,” explained Crowley.

“Eddie is suited to a strongman’s course. Paidi - we all know his strengths - while Storan is more of an all-rounder. And though he has had good results in the past, I think the best is yet to come from him. He’s been doing well in our Saturday morning TT leagues and I expect him to have a good season this year.”
