A new Netflix series on suffering and unusual sports features last year's inaugural women's Paris-Roubaix

A new Netflix series - Human Playground - features the women's inaugural Paris Roubaix last year as one of its six episodes. The series is focused on extreme or unusual sporting events around the world, with a special focus on suffering.

Last year's first women's Paris Roubaix was won by Lizzie Deignan with a long range attack but the new Netflix series episode focuses mainly on her Trek-Segafredo team mate Ellen van Dijk's ride in the race.

As well as the women's 'Hell of the North' the new series also features episodes on a range of over sports and events, from desert marathon running to sumo wrestling, bull fighting and big wave surfing. The episode featuring Paris-Roubaix is narrated by British actor Idris Elba.

Van Dijk, the reigning world TT champion and Dutch road race champion, was chosen as the featured rider for the cycling episode as she was one of the favourites for Paris-Roubaix and because of her back story.

"When I was 19 years old, I was hit by a car on my motorcycle. And the accident crushed my left leg below the knee. Forty-five surgeries later, my leg was amputated," she says on screen.

"Not many of us get a second chance, but I did. My gift is the ability to endure. I can never get stronger if I don't continue to challenge myself. And that's what led me to the toughest foot race in the world."
