Elite Irish team for Velothon Wales UCI pro race

A new-look elite Irish team has been selected for the Velothon Wales pro race in just over a week’s time.

Eddie Dunbar (Axeon Hagens Berman) is the stand-out name in the selection. But combined the six men given the nod form a very strong unit.

Unsurprisingly Chris McGlinchey is rewarded with a place in the elite Irish team.

The ChainReactionCycles man took 2nd in the road race at the National Championships in Co Wexford last weekend.

McGlinchey rode out of his socks to finish runner-up to Ryan Mullen (Cannondale-Drapac).

Also in the team for the 175km UCI 1.1 pro race in Wales on Sunday week is Angus Fyffe.

The Omagh Wheelers rider was 2nd in the U23 category at the nationals and had already won a string of races in the early part of the season.

He took the John Moore Memorial, McCann Cup, Wallace Caldwell Memorial and East Tyrone GP.

The man Fyffe edged in the sprint for silver at the nationals, Ryan Reilly, is also picked for Velothon Wales.

Now riding on the colours of French team AC Bisontine, Reilly won the Carn Classic early in the season.

He was also on the podium at the PJ Logan Memorial and the Annaclone GP, place 2nd and 3rd respectively.

One of the men of the first half of the season, Darragh O’Mahony (O’Leary Stone Kanturk) also make the latest Irish team.

He has won several races this year, the best if which was the Des Hanlon Memorial. He also won the Newbridge GP, Rás Luimni and a stage of the Tour of Ulster where he was 3rd overall.

Completing the six-man Irish team is Adam Stenson of Bikeworx Celbridge.

He took two wins early in the year; claiming the A2 events at both the Boyne GP and the Cycleways Cup.

And since being upgraded to A1 he has won a round of the Mondello Series and took 4th on a stage of Rás Mumhan.

A surprising omission from the elite Irish team, which contains five U23 riders and five men based in Ireland, is Darnell Moore.

He was a very impressive winner of the Shay Elliott Memorial earlier in the year.

Moore took that race solo at the end of 164km. He on a course that was changed to make it longer and harder.

The 20-year-old also won the John Mulligan Memorial more recently. And he has been on the podium six times this season.

Incredibly Moore (Caldwell Cycles) has never been picked for an Irish team. It is a fact he surely would have expected to change after his Elliott win.

Another man not selected, and who has also yet to get the nod on any Irish team, is Dermot Trulock of Lucan CRC.

He has been in excellent for this season. And he just about missed out on a medal in the U23 championships last weekend.

Trulock was 4th in that race behind Michael O'Loughlin (Team Wiggins), Fyffe and Reilly. The Dubliner has been ever-present in the results this year, taking two victories.

He was also 4th overall at the Tour of Ulster and 8th overall at Rás Mumhan.
