Cyclists from Ireland and further afield have a new challenge to sink their teeth into in the Republic with the launch of the Wild Mayo Ultra Cycle event.
With two routes to choose from – 650km and 300km – as
well as plenty of elevation and spectacular countryside, the organisers have
the makings of a great event that should attract riders who really went to test
themselves.
The ultra race is being organised by the Ireland West Promotion group, with help from local clubs, and they have selected a route based around the Mayo coastline, which is part of the Wild Atlantic Way.
“This event is not for the faint hearted; it really is ultra tough,” said co-organiser Padraig Marrey. “Once the clock starts, competitors must negotiate 650km of Mayo roads, mountains, boreens and, in doing so, climb over 6,500m of elevation.
“The shorter 300km event is for those new to ultra. The
course still takes in quite a few iconic Mayo beauty spots, but only on the
north and west of the county. The route still bangs a big punch, however,
with 3,500m of elevation.”
Marrey said the organisers “hope the Wild Mayo Ultra will
be to Mayo what the Ironman is to Kona in Hawaii”.
The event has a number of sponsors in the shape of The
Mariner boutique hotel in Westport as well as Westport Bike Shop and Marrey
Bikes. It is also supported by Destination Westport and Mayo.ie.
The inaugural event will be held on Saturday, July 24th, and you can check out the routes and get more details by following this link.
