One of the newest endurance cycling events on the Irish calendar, the Wild Mayo Ultra is set to switch to an earlier season date next year amid growing confidence the pandemic will not impact cycling in the same way in 2022.

The inaugural Wild Mayo Ultra events took place at the end of July but next year it will move to the much earlier dates of May 13th and 14th.

The event organisers are not hanging around in announcing their plans for next season and are hopeful the earlier dates will result in even bigger fields, as events earlier in the year are traditionally better supported.

There are three different distances to choose from including 650km, 300km and 200km. While the short distances will still present a stern test, they should be within reach of most cyclists who train or compete regularly.

However, the 200km and 300km routes can also be taken on with a "buddy" in a relay format. And while the longer route of 650km is open to solo riders - and presents and really big challenge - it is also open to teams of two, six, four and eight riders.

The event is hosted out of Westport in Co Mayo and one of the organisers, Padraig Marrey, said he and his colleagues were really looking forward to building on what was a very successful first edition back in July.

"Ultra cycling allows participants to go deep, go further, go harder and challenge themselves whilst having the safety net of a backup crew and vehicle to support them," Marrey said of the lure of events like Mayo Ultra.

"In 2022 we are offering three routes for the Wild Mayo Ultra, to cater for the growing demand from cyclists to go long, to push themselves and to see how far they can go.

"Completing an ultra event is one of the most personal and satisfying experiences, be it as a solo rider or on a team. A lot of participants use ultra events to fundraise for a charity and this helps give purpose for completing these tough events.

"By using the routes from the Wild Mayo Ultra we promise it will push the body and mind to the limit but will satisfy the soul. The beautiful scenery will help to take your mind off the difficulty encountered on the challenge.”
