Newly-declared Irish rider Robbie McCarthy took a promising result last night with 2nd place in a criterium race in Adelaide, Australia.
The Cork-born rider, who moved to Australia in his early teens, beat plenty WorldTour riders in the event which was promoted by Norwood Cycling Club in South Australia.
In the field were the likes of Nathan Haas (Dimension Data), Damien Howson (Orica-BikeExchange) and Mitch Mulhern (Cyclingteam Join's De Rijke).
But McCarthy showed he’s not lost any of the finishing speed that saw him crowned Australian junior national road race champion in 2012 and a Rás stage winner.
Australian international track sprinter Scott Sunderland won the event but McCarthy was right on his wheel crossing the line.
McCarthy will spend the next few months in Australia before moving to Europe to start a new career with UK-based Continental outfit JLT Condor.
