New inter club races sanctioned by Cycling Ireland with max number of riders

Cycling Ireland has clarified inter club races have been sanctioned for the remainder of the year, with just seven days notice required.

A number of inter club events have already been run in
recent weeks as Irish road cycling readied for the resumption of open races.

Newcastle West Cycling Club, Foyle Cycling Club, Donegal
Bay CC and others have all organised either TTs or inter club road races.

And now Cycling Ireland has issued a statement clarifying
that inter club races – which can be organised among several clubs – can take
place for the remainder of the year.

The move may prove very useful in plugging any gaps in
the calendar that arise if scheduled road races are cancelled due to concerns
about Covid19 within the promoting club.

It may also prove harder for clubs around the country to
secure Garda or police and paramedic cover for events because of the pandemic,
but hopefully this will not be a major issue.

It is now clear that when and where the need for inter
club races arise, the events can be held subject to a number of conditions.

Cycling Ireland said the events can be held any day of
the week for the remainder of 2020, under the following conditions:

  • Permission to hold an interclub-club race on a weekend must be sought at least or no later than 7 days in advance from the Calendar Coordinator at Cycling Ireland
  • There is no open race being promoted in the province or within 30km of the proposed interclub-club race on that weekend
  • All events must follow the Cycling Ireland return to sport protocols
  • The event is subject to a 100 rider maximum number of participants

The fact the inter club races are now being sanctioned
until the end of the year, and now just the end of the season, may prove
crucial.

If a number of races towards the end of the rescheduled
season were cancelled, for example, inter club races could be arranged to
extend the road racing campaign.
