First for Irish cycling as new gravel racing series launched

A new gravel series, a first for Irish cycling, will be run in the weeks ahead, before the new road racing campaign gets underway

A new gravel racing series, the first of its kind for Irish cycling, has been launched and will run over the four Saturdays in February.

The series - The Bog Trials - is being run by Galway Bay Cycling Club and is "inspired" by the Galway Classic; the road race launched three years ago by the Galway club and which features gravel sectors.

The four gravel races will be run next month as an open league on 4.5km circuits in the bogs of east Galway. The four rounds are as follows:

The series is open to all cyclists with an leisure cyclist licence or higher and each race is limited to 30 riders. The following races will be run:

  • Men's A Race for experienced road, cyclocross and mountain bikers - open to gravel and cross bikes
  • Men's B Race - open to cyclocross, gravel and mountain bikes
  • Women’s Race - open to cyclocross, gravel and mountain bikes
  • Youth Races for U12, U14, U16 - open to cyclocross, gravel and mountain bikes
