New ghost bike marks spot where cyclist hit by car and killed in Dublin
This new ghost bike has been installed at the spot where a cyclist was killed after being hit by a car in Dublin.
After a dark period for cycling road fatalities since the start of the year, the family and loved ones of one of the victims has unveiled a ghost bike in his memory.
It has been installed at the gates of the Phoenix Park on Conyngham Road where Daragh Ryan was killed last month.
The 30-year-old was cycling at the location on the afternoon of Sunday, March 12th, last when he was in collision with a car and died as a result.
Ghost bikes have become an international phenomenon over the years.
However, while cycling fatalities have generate more media coverage and public debate in Ireland in recent years very few ghost bikes have been installed.
They are painted all white and intended to mark the spot where a cyclist was killed in order to ensure the death is not forgotten.
They also act as a warning to others driving and cycling in the area.
News that the ghost bike has been installed in recent days in Dublin emerged on Facebook when a friend of Mr Ryan’s posted a message and photographs.
“A ghost bike memorial has been placed at the spot where cyclist Daragh was killed when he was struck by a car at the Conyngham Road entrance to the Phoenix Park,” the notice says.
“Daragh wasn’t just a cyclist. He was 30 years old and was a brilliant and kind young man with a bright future.
“He was a big Star Wars fan. He was a son, a brother, a friend, and a cousin. Daragh will be missed by everyone who knew him. Please take care of each other on the roads.”
