A new feature-length documentary on the life of well-known cycling commentator Phil Liggett is set for release in cinemas in Australia in coming weeks and will also be available to watch around the world on streaming services.
Phil Liggett, The Voice of Cycling follows the British commentator's career over 50 years in the sport of professional cycling and includes his work on the Tour de France, for which he is perhaps best known.
Liggett was co-commentator for decades with former professional rider and British champion Paul Sherwen, who died suddenly two years ago. As a duo they were very popular in Britain and later in the US.
The trailer of the new documentary, below, also implies Liggett will speak about his relationship with Lance Armstrong. For years Liggett championed Armstrong and insisted there was no proof against him.
Liggett has been forced to deny accusations he was "in Armstrong's pocket". Though he mixed with Armstrong away from cycling, including appearing at events with him, Liggett has insisted they were never friends.
While Liggett defended Armstrong against doping accusations during the period of his career and directly after it, he has insisted he merely wanted proof Armstrong was guilty.
Cycling fans in Ireland of a certain vintage will remember Liggett as the voice of Channel 4's cycling coverage, including the famous commentary on Stephen Roche's 1987 Tour win when he fought his way back into contention against Pedro Delgado on La Plagne.
The new two-hour documentary film is made by Nickolas Bird and Eleanor Sharpe, who brought us the MAMIL cycling movie. As well as featuring Liggett's life in cycling it also takes a look at his conservation work from his home in Kruger National Park, South Africa.
