The new Cycling Ireland A1 rankings, covering the period of last week's Rás, have been published with Matteo Cigala still on top.

The Aqua Blue Sport Academy rider has been flying all season and had already long been leading the rankings before the Rás.

He managed to pick up an extra 24 points last week; some 6 points for 10th on the opening stage and 18 points for 4th the following day.

Unfortunately for him by the time the climbing stages were completed he had come down with illness.

That saw him take no further results, though he would have been much fancied for the last two stages had he been in full health.

He now has 176 points compared to 124 for Mark Dowling; the Strata3-VeloRevolution rider still 2nd in the rankings.

Dowling expressed his disappointment to stickybottle at the end of the Rás, saying he had great legs but had messed up the race.

However, he made the winning escape on the final stage and took 4th place into Skerries. That saw him take 18 points.

In third place in the new rankings is Eoin Morton (UCD-FitzCycles.ie), on 116 points. He rode the Rás on the national team.

He won a fantastic stage 2 last year when he broke clear with fellow county rider Bryan McCrystal and made it all the way.

However, he had a quieter race this year and did not score any points.

It means with Cigala and Dowling scoring while Morton didn’t, the gap between the top two and the rest is now bigger at the top of the standings.

One man who has improved his position in the rankings is Darragh O’Mahony. He was also on the Irish team in the Rás and rode a fantastic race.

He was constantly on the attack and his 7th on stage 3 and 4th on stage 7 added 30 points to his tally, which is now 110.

He was 11th in the rankings the last time stickybottle reported on them six weeks ago.

Points awarded for results at the An Post Rás were much higher than for domestic races. There were 24 points for a stage win, down to 2 for 12th place.

Usually even the hardest races of the year, such as the Des Hanlon Memorial, carry 12 points for victory.

It means some Irish riders have made big gains in the new A1 ranking as a result of their Rás performances.

And some of the big names have entered the scoring in the rankings for the first time this year.

Damien Shaw was highest placed Irishman in the Rás, taking 5th overall. That saw him take 26 points.

And he was awarded 2 points for his 12th place on stage 5 and 8 points for his 10th place on stage 3.

Because he has been racing abroad with An Post-Chainreaction, his Rás points were the first he scored so far this year.

Hr took  a total of 38 points away from the Rás which sees him now 23rd in the rankings.

Similarly, Michael O’Loughlin is riding for Team Wiggins overseas. He had not scored points in Ireland before the Rás.

But his 8th overall saw him take 20 points and his 12th on stage 6 added two points to his tally, which is now 22.

He is in 42nd place in the rankings, with his U23 classification Rás victory not attracting any Cycling Ireland ranking points.

There are now 278 riders listed in the A1 rankings, made up of several groups. There are those who were A1 riders at the start of the year and have scored points since then.

Others were A1s at the start of the year and have raced but failed to score points yet. They are listed below but have zero points.

Others were zero points are those promoted to A1 since the start of the year but have yet to score points since promotion, meaning they too are listed below as having zero points.

And other riders have been promoted to A1 since the season started and have already scored some points as A1s.
