New cycle lanes in Dublin suburb have to be seen to be believed | Video

The intention is there, but the execution - mostly of the parking - renders these new cycle lanes in Dublin unusable and a shambles

You can see what they were trying to do - and the intention was a good one - but the execution of these brand new cycle lanes in a north Dublin suburb is an absolute shambles.

While the road surface and the markings are brand new, the lanes are absolutely unusable and they seem to be invisible to almost all of the motorists who have parked these cars, as you can see from the video below.

The footage - recorded and posted by Twitter user Alan D - shows the new lanes in Clongriffin. While the vehicles should be parked parallel with the road, all of the drivers have parked their vehicles perpendicularly. The result is the front or rear of the vehicles overhang the cycle lane.

Some of the cars are so small there is enough room for them to fit into the parking spaces without impeding the cycle lanes, even though they are parked incorrectly. But in most cases the vehicles overhang the lane and one or two of cars are so large they overhang the full width of the cycle lane.

The problem seems to have emerged because perpendicular parking became the norm when the cycle lanes were not marked. It seems drivers became used to parking perpendicularly and now that the markings have been put in place for the cycle lanes, the established parking habits have persisted.
