New cycle lane in Dublin not working out quite as planned | Video

This freshly minted cycle lane in Dublin is not working out as planned, as the video below reveals

This new cycle lane in Adamstown, Dublin, has been put into use as a car park having just been freshly laid out and opened. While it was intended for cyclists, the video below shows drivers have been using it to parallel park.

Other motorists have pulled into parking spots by the roadside with the back of their vehicles hanging so far over the bike lane that cyclists would be forced into the adjacent bus lane to pass.

The use of the new lane as a car park has been highlighted by Twitter user @R_ichT, who shot the clip below of a cyclist passing the cycle lane, from the bus lane.

Adamstown was a planned suburban development and the first new town in Ireland since Shannon Town in the 1960s. It is located around 16km from Dublin city centre, and is close to Lucan.

However, while the cycle lanes were clearly intended to boost sustainable transport, in a bid to get people out of cars and on their bikes, it seems some of the locals have very different ideas.

Hopefully the local gardaí will get on top of this by enforcing the laws and hand out some fixed charge notices, as well as running some public meetings to introduce these drivers to the cycle lane concept.
