Having run as a demonstration event this year, the National Criterium Championships women’s race will be a full title race from next year.

Last month Dillon Corkery (Team Gerard-DHL) won the men’s race from Damien Shaw (Holdsworth) and Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles).

A woman’s race was run on the same night on the same course in Mullingar.

It was won by Fiona Guihan (Black Rose Racing). Jennifer Bates (Gerard Cycles-DHL) was 2nd and Lyndsey Bryce (Dublin Wheelers) was 3rd.

However, while the race was hard fought and produced a really strong winner and medallists, it was not a championship event.

The event needed to be run as a demonstration event first before a national title would be put on the line.

But now Cycling Ireland has bestowed full championships status on the race for next year.

“The women’s commission are delighted to announce that the Women’s Criterium Championships will have full national status in 2019,” the commission said in a statement.

“Cycling Ireland has approved a formal application by the women’s commission for a full National Women’s Criterium Championships for 2019, following a successful demonstration event in 2018.

“Cycling Ireland approved our application at a board meeting (last weekend).”
