New Battaglin Stephen Roche 1987 Columbus bikes, these are posh
The bike marks the 30th anniversary - this year - of Stephen Roche's Giro, Tour and World Champs triumph in 1987.
Italian bike builders Officina Battaglin is marking the 30th anniversary of Stephen Roche’s 1987 Giro D’Italia, Tour de France and World Championships triumphs with a new bike.
The handmade Columbus steel frame comes with a livery marking the three events. It is also includes diamonds on the down tube and only 30 are being made.
It’s a snip at €8,000. So if you want one you need plenty of readies.
The three diamonds represent the three victories and are contained within a tiny gold plate on one of the down tube’s lugs. The feature is visible in the first photo below.

The frame is made from Columbus SLX tubing which is very popular in the pre-carbon fibre days of the 1980s and into the 1990s.
Officina Battaglin said it was delighted to recreate the bike used by Roche in 1987, confirming he had been involved with the project.
“We're proud to say that the Stephen Roche is made from Columbus SLX tubing, the same tube set that was used to build the 1987 Battaglin bike,” it says.
“The double-butted Columbus SLX was all the Italian bicycle makers' choice when building bikes for professional use.

“With the iconic helical reinforcements inside the end of the seat tube and the down tube, Columbus would produce steel tubes that were reinforced only in the bottom bracket area.
"That was where higher stress concentrated because of professional cyclists' powerful pedal strokes.
“At the time it was an advanced solution, which would make for lightweight steel bikes offering the highest level of performance.
“Now, Stephen Roche will be the only modern-construction steel frame made from Columbus SLX.”
