Bryan McCrystal is within touching distance of becoming the National Road Series champion this weekend when the final round takes the riders to Bangor, Co. Down for the North Down GP.

The Team ASEA man leads the way on 294 points with Mark Downing (DID Dunboyne) next best on 287 points.

These scores are the respective tallies of both riders’ top five results of the series so far.

Both their cumulative scores take into account the fact riders must compete in at least three of the four provinces after which a rider’s top five results are calculated.

McCrystal’s impressive tally of 294 is seven points better than Dowling’s, but if Dowling were to win the final round  this weekend and McCrystal finish outside the top three, the DID Dunboyne man would be crowned champion.

McCrystal’s tally of 294 has come from wins in the Wallace Caldwell Memorial (Ulster - 63), the Davis Cup (Connacht - 63), the Eddie Tobin Memorial (Leinster - 63), a runner-up in the Dan O’Donovan Memorial (Munster - 57) and fourth in the John Beggs Memorial (Ulster - 48) last weekend.

Dowling’s tally of 287, meanwhile, has come from wins in the Tralee Manor West GP (Munster – 63), the Des Hanlon (Leinster – 63), third places in the John Beggs Memorial (Ulster – 52) and the Visit Nenagh Classic (Munster – 52) and second in the Eddie Tobin Memorial (Leinster - 57).

If he were to win this weekend, the 63 points he'd get would replace his points scored from the John Beggs Memorial, gaining him 11 more and seeing him finish on 298.

Eoin Morton is currently third overall with a fine tally of 262 points and that is where he will remain, even if he were to win and both Dowling and McCrystal were to score nothing.
