National Criterium Champs set for tight town centre course in Banbridge

The National Criterium Championships 2024 have been launched with the titles this year set to be decided on Banbridge town centre in Co Down. Host club Banbridge CC will promote the race on a 1km course, with the town centre venue likely to serve up some exciting racing.

The races, separate events for men and women, will be run on the evening of Friday, May 10th, and will start and finish on Banbridge main street, with full road closures to apply on the night. You can enter now by following this link.

"Both the women’s and ,men’s national championship races will also incorporate Ulster Championship status, with two sets of medals being awarded per race and both being allocated equal race time on the evening," said Banbridge CC.

"The women’s championship race will commence at 6:45pm, with two hot spot prime sprints at 15 and 30 minutes and total race time of approximately one hour. The men’s championship race will follow the same format, commencing at 8pm.

"Keeping the fast-paced action of crit racing in an accessible town centre where it belongs, spectators will have the benefit of race announcer and MC Pat ‘Shocks’ O’Shaughnessy who always does a tremendous job at keeping the crowd informed and entertained, and whipping up an atmosphere for the competitors.

"With the short 1km circuit the action is close up and continuous, as the front riders complete each lap approximately every 90 seconds."

In line with technical regulations for Cycling Ireland national championships, registration is restricted to riders with an IRL nationality licence code and will remain open no later than Friday May 3rd at 6:30pm.
