Felix English won the National Criterium Championships in Mullingar last year. But this year's event - planned for Douglas in Cork on Saturday evening - has been cancelled because so
few riders have entered so far.
That National Criterium Championships planned for this coming Saturday, July 27th, have been cancelled because so few riders have entered.
Cycling Ireland confirmed the news this afternoon by releasing a statement prepared by Will Curtin of the promotiong club; Cork County CC. It is unclear when, or if, the title race will be held this year.
Statement from Cork County CC issued via Cycling Ireland
It is with great regret that we have to call off the National Criterium Championships due to be held in Cork this Saturday evening.
Unfortunately entries have been far too weak to justify the closure of such a busy area.
As the promoting club we are disappointed that some of the hard work by members will not be rewarded with a day of great racing in a very visible location.
We feel that the scheduling of the National Criterium Championships should be looked at in future to prevent prestigious event from falling by the wayside. There are two other races being promoted on the calendar on the same day of this year’s championship.
We would like to thank the Gardaí , Cork County Council , the residences and business owners of the Douglas area , Douglas Parish Church ,The Girls School Douglas, the Emergency Services, Aidan and Ted Crowley, Frank Gibson, the staff in Cycling Ireland, Mick Twomey and of course our club members and sponsors; Wills Wheels Bike Store, OBOS and Fitness Worx Gym.
We would like to thank Martyn Irvine and Philip Lavery for their kind messages of support.
Those who have entered; we thank you sincerely, your entries will be posted back to your clubs.
