Mel Spath rode as national champion in the colours of Team Tibco in 2013 but is moving to a Danish outfit for next year.
On a day when national men’s road race champion Matt Brammeier announced he had signed a new deal with the Synergy Baku team for next year, his female counterpart Mel Spath has revealed similar news about her own future.
The Irish champion for the past two seasons, Spath has penned a deal with the Danish pro squad Team Rytger which counts Danish national champion Kamilla Sofie Vallin among its ranks.
Having converted to road racing just two years ago from mountain biking, where she won a string of national titles and scored some major victories on the UK circuit, Spath lifted the national road crown for the first time last year.
She then progressed to ride for US-based Team Tibco this year.
She boosted her experience and strength riding in the US, Europe and Asia, and will be looking to bring that experience to bear next season for her new employer.
Her new team will be familiar to Irish cycling fans having ridden Rás na mBan as recently as this year.
On that occasion, Siggaard Malling took victory on the final stage for Team Rytger in a race where Spath finished second overall to Olivia Dillon, her team mate on the Irish squad for the An Post-backed premier Irish women’s event.
Malling was also 4th overall on the final general classification.
We’ll have more news on Spath’s move when we catch up with her in the next day or two.
