An Garda Siochana has pledged to investigate how somebody using a Garda email address lodged an objection to proposals for a section of the Lee to Sea Greenway in Cork.
Under the plans, which stickybottle wrote about recently, it is envisaged existing sections of walking and cycling routes in Cork city and county be connected and upgraded to create a stunning 45km greenway.
However, an objection purporting to come from the Garda
was lodged against the plans for the route between Harty's Quay and Hop Island
along the southern shores of the Douglas estuary.
The submission
claimed residents who live along
the waterfront had spoken to Passage West gardaí and expressed their concern at
the plan to run the greenway route behind their houses.
It added there
was an obvious risk that if the route was behind the houses it would increase
the likelihood of trespass, and may invite “undesirable and uninvited
trespassers and anti-social gatherings”
to the area at the back of the homes.
Cork City Council
has now decided to run the route to the front of the homes in question, and
along the Rochestown Road. However, it was not clear if that decision was
swayed by the submission coming from the Garda email address.
An Garda Siochana has told local media in Cork it was not aware of anyone in the force who had made the submission. It added anyone who had made the submission from within the Garda was not representing the official Garda position and had made the submission in a personal capacity. The Garda further stated no submission had been made by the force.
However, Cork
City Council has said it believes the submission was made by the gardai at the
Passage West Garda station, though no name was attached to it when it was made available
publicly along with other submissions.
Rochestown Area Residents and Business Association has hired a solicitor to write to the council and demand that the identity of the person within the Garda who made the submission be made available.
They also want clarification as to whether the submission
was indeed made by the Garda and if that clarity cannot be provided they want
the submission withdrawn.
