It's difficult to fathom how 18-year-old British rider Gabriel Evans felt he needed to take EPO to win a junior time trial title in Britain.

The Londoner confessed to taking the illegal performance enhancer prior to winning the 10-mile time-trial title race earlier this year.

His admission came after he was caught when his team mate's father saw drugs in his belongings at a training camp and blew the whistle.

Amongst those who responded on Twitter to the news was multiple Irish time-trial champion Ryan Mullen.

“Heard someone used EPO to win the junior National 10 mile TT championships. If I recall correctly, I won that race hungover. Who needs EPO?!”

The new Cannondale-Garmin pro later added: “Obviously I do not condone racing with a hangover either. Don’t do it kids!”

The race Evans won was the Cycling Time Trials 10 mile title event earlier this year.

Mullen won it as a junior even though he rides for Ireland rather than Great Britain, where he was born and grew up.

He won the 2012 CTT 10 mile title in a time of 21:25, some 30 seconds faster than runner up Scott Davies despite his hangover.
