Overtaking motorist hit cyclists in Roscommon

Three club cyclists were on a training ride when a driver behind them tried to overtake. The manoeuvre went wrong and two of the cyclists are still in hospital.

Two of the three triathlon club cyclists injured in a collision with a vehicle at the weekend were still in hospital last night.

The incident occurred on the Boyle to Ballyfarnon L1013 road near Doon in Co Roscommon on Sunday between 9.15am and 9.30am.

Early indications are that a vehicle attempted to overtake the club spin on the stretch of road when the crash occurred.

However, an oncoming vehicle appeared and the motorist trying to overtake the cyclists was forced into a corrective manoeuvre.

While doing that, the motorist hit the cyclists. Two of the three women suffered serious injuries.

Their condition is not life-threatening but they remain in hospital and face a long recovery due to their injuries.

Gardai arrive on the scene and after speaking to the motorist they arrested the man.

He was brought to nearby Castlerea Garda barracks to be questioned.  He was placed under arrested by the Garda using Section 4 of the Road Traffic Act.

The cyclists are all in their 30s. They are members of the Lough Key Triathlon Club based in the Carrick on Shannon and Boyle areas.

Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene, in north Roscommon. The women were treated on the road where the crash occurred by paramedics.

And they were then taken for further treatment by ambulance to Sligo General Hospital.

Gardai closed off the road when the incident occurred did tests there, as well as on the car involved.

The gardai are continuing their inquiries into the incident as the two injured women remain in hospital.
