Motorist charged with death of Irish rider on club Sunday spin

A man has appeared in court to face criminal charges in connection with the death of Kerry cyclist Ed Duggan, who was killed on a training ride late last year.

Mr Duggan died after he was hit by a car on November 15th, 2015, while cycling on the N22 at Scart, Farranfore, Co Kerry.

A 36-year-old Killarney CC rider, Mr Duggan was out with his club mates on a Sunday morning spin at the time.

The vehicle that hit the deceased cyclist was allegedly driven by Sean O’Mahony (32) with an address at Ballybeggan, Tralee, Co Kerry.

Mr O’Mahony appeared before Killarney District Court earlier today, Tuesday.

The court heard the accused man has been charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Mr Duggan. There was an alleged speeding dimension to the fatal collision.

Garda Damien Callinan told Judge James O’Connor the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed trial on indictment, meaning it would proceed before the Circuit Court.

He added when the charge was put to the accused man and he was asked whether he had anything to say he replied: “No”.

The case was adjourned to July, at which point the book of evidence was expected to be ready for the trial.
