Motorist (17) stole cyclist’s bike in Dublin road rage

A teenager has appeared before the courts in Dublin after he stole a bike from a cyclist during a road rage incident.

The motorist is aged just 17 years and so appeared in the Children’s Court in the city. And because he is a minor he cannot be named.

The court was told the road rage attack occurred in Clondalkin, Dublin, in March.

However, the matter dated back to an earlier incident when the cyclist and driver encountered each other.

The cyclist had made an obscene hand gesture to the teenager; raising his middled finger to him.

That had annoyed the driver of the car and he began following him in the vehicle.

The court was told the cyclist became concerned at the intimidating way the car was being driven after him.

As a precaution and in fear he went up onto the footpath. However, the court heard that the car was also driven up onto the pavement.

And when the man on the bike turned into a housing estate to try and hide, the driver again followed.

Once in the estate the motorist continued to follow the cyclist and stole his bike from him before driving off.

But gardai stopped him minutes later and now the matter has ended up in the courts.

The teen, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and theft of a bicycle.

Judge John O’Connor said he was putting the case back for two months. He wanted a report from a probation officer prepared about the boy.

Sentencing was adjourned and will take place in November.
