Dubliner Eoin Morton has really come into his own in the last few years and is now a regular winning big races on the domestic scene.

He's recently been selected onto his first Irish time - to ride in the US after the Rás.

He has also gained international experience riding for the Dublin Thunder team in Los Angeles on the track earlier this year as part of the new World Cycling League team track racing franchise.

A rare sight on the Rás in the modern era; a county rider wearing a classification leader's jersey. Morton went for the climbers' jersey and now he has it.

Today Morton crashed towards the end of the first stage of the Rás though picked himself up and finished in 100th place in a group 5:03 down.

However, that mishap  could not overshadow what was a great first stage for him.

He spent enough time clear in a breakaway and was strong enough out front to the take the climbers' prime atop the cat 3 Lough Crew climb at 54km.

In doing so he took the first climbers' classicisation leader's jersey of this year's race. He spoke to Shane Stokes of stickybottle at the finish in Multyfarnham.
