This Saturday, September 14th, will see The Morgan Sparrow Memorial Sportive take place; starting and finishing in Co Dublin but with most of the route in Co Wicklow.
A new member of Dublin-based Usher Irish Road Club, Morgan was making his return to road racing as an A4 when he crashed in an inter club race last year and died. He had last competed at junior level over 20 years ago.
He was one of five Usher IRC members who are also members of the Air Corps, where he held the rank of Commandant and was Commanding Officer of 302 Squadron (Helicopters).
The sportive starts and finishes at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel, Co Dublin, and the route will take the riders over both Sally Gap and Wicklow Gap for a distance of 120 kilometres.
The event is well marshalled with a water stop at the top of Sally Gap, and a food stop at Wicklow Gap.
Two groups will set off with the faster group expected to average approximately 28 kilometres per hour, and the second group averaging 25 kilometres per hour.
Breakfast is provided prior to the start, and dinner will also be available at the finish. The entry fee is €30 and includes all catering, and helmets are compulsory.
The organisers would appreciate the submission of application forms in advance of the day to allow them to determine the numbers that will need to be catered for. Application forms are available from both Hollingsworth Cycles in Stillorgan and Templeogue and Stagg Cycles in Lucan.
However, sign-on will also be available on the day, opening at 8am with the cycle starting at 9.15am.
