When the route for the An Post Rás 2013 emerged last year, today's stage 4 would have jumped out as a world of pain to be battled through for most riders; a day of survival for those county men fixed on finishing, rather than winning, this race.
However, for more than twenty riders who managed to get through today's bruising encounter from Listowel to Glengarrif - a 150km leg with no fewer than eight categorised climbs - getting over the line today, it appears, is only the beginning of their fight to survive in the race this evening.
The stage results and general classification have been released, brought to you earlier here on stickybottle, and show 23 men missed the time limit at the end of today's hard road. The riders have been clearly marked on the stage result as being outside the limit and their names have not been included in the general classification result.
At the time of writing at 6pm on Wednesday, all of the riders are officially out of the race and must now appeal their exclusion. The judges will listen to and deliberate on each case on its merits and hopefully most will be allowed to continue. The 23 men were outside the cut of 20 per cent of the time of winner Kirill Pozdnyakov (Synergy Baku).
The deadline to finish today's stage was 4:09.56, with the winner having clocked a time of 3:27.17. A large group finished in a time of 3:55.02, with a couple of back markers in that group losing a few more seconds but still being almost 15 minutes inside the limit. However, after those riders, there was a gap of some 16 minutes to the next group, though almost all of those eliminated finished within five minutes of the time limit.
We will bring you news of any appeals when we have it.
