Two further Irish cycling clubs have been forced to call off races they were due to promote at the start of the season, though it is hoped at least one of the fixtures can be rescheduled.

While the current Covid-19 restrictions in place on both
sides of the Border are due to expire on March 5th, there is uncertainty about
what will happened after that date.

And now Banbridge CC and Phoenix CC have announced the
races they were due to hold on the first weekend in March are off.

Banbridge CC had been due to run the Travers Engineering
Annaclone GP on Saturday, March 6th, while Phoenix CC was due to promote the
Phoenix GP the following day.

Banbridge CC said it was with regret it had to postpone
its races, especially as they would have opened the road racing season in
Ulster.

“Understandably, with the current restrictions and risk
to public health, hosting an event of this nature is not in the interest of the
participants, event volunteers or indeed the local community,” it said.

Phoenix CC said while the lock-down measures were due to
end on March 5th, there was too much uncertainty about restrictions would in
place on the date of its race, just two days later.

The “huge logistical challenge of
getting all the resources in place to put on a large racing event” combined
with the uncertainty “has made the decision inevitable,” the club said.

“We sincerely hope that some racing
events will be possible for other clubs later in the 2021 season and we look
forward to seeing our friends from around the country when racing resumes.”
