The tangled wreckage of several cars can be seen at the site of the major rock-fall that forced Milan Sanremo to detour, pushing it above the 300km mark.
The riders in Milan Sanremo were lucky today when a major rockslide onto the race route occurred just before the field was due to reach the spot.
The incident completely blocked the road around 130km into the intended race route, with riders having completed about 60km at the time.
The organisers RSC quickly organised a 9km-long detour, taking the race from the coastal road onto a nearby motorway and back again.
How the aftermath looked from the other side; no chance of the field getting through here.
The detour added about 5km onto the route, which officially was 291km.
However, with a neutralised zone of just under 9km at the start and the detour extra 5km or so, the riders had been in the saddle for just over 300km by the time they finished.
The rock slide saw a number of large boulders crash from a cliff wall onto the road, crushing a number of cars and destroying them.
It appears there were no fatalities though two people on foot in the area are believed to be injured.
A statement from the organisers while the race was underway said: “Due to a landslide on the Milan-San Remo original race course in between Genova Voltri and Arenzano, the race direction together with the police support officer decided to divert the race onto the A10 highway, entering in Genova Voltri and exiting in Arenzano to rejoin the original course. This detour is now officially part of the race course.”
