Irish cycling legend Mick Lawless: This was the face you wanted to see when you had blown your lights; often with hours of racing still ahead of you. Mick got many men over the line and will be deeply missed by so many people in Irish cycling.
Irish cycling will bid farewell in coming days to Mick Lawless whose sad passing has taken place.
Dubliner
Mick was a legend of the home scene; a big personality whose constant good humour
and generosity of spirit was renowned.
Mick
had been unwell for some time and his son James this afternoon confirmed that
he had sadly passed away last night.
For many years he was a stalwart of the Irish Road Club, who lost another big figure in Frank Gibson just before Easter. And he was also a central character in South Dublin CC after that.
Mick was involved in Irish cycling since his racing days as a teenager. He traveled around the country managing and supporting generations of riders that passed through his own clubs.
And for many years he was a member of the Rás Tailteann family; the perfect man for the broom wagon.

Mick’s was the face you wanted to see when you were getting it rough down the back of the race; an unforgiving place on the Rás.
During
those long, hard and often wet stages he was confidante, coach and chief
encourager to so many Irish riders experiencing some of their worst days ever
on a bike.
His
urging on of riders and the help he could give them was very often the difference
between finishing and climbing off mid stage.
Sadly in the last few years his Rás role was one he was unable to fill on the race. But on each of those editions he was deeply missed.
Mick was a former president of Cycling Ireland, or the Irish Cycling Federation as it was known back then; in 2006-2007.
He was also the main figure behind getting the Corkagh Park racing track off the ground; a contribution that lives on.
There are very few people who could maintain involvement in a sport for as long as Mick did and remain as popular as him. He was a gentleman and always great fun.
And while it is perhaps easy to speak well of people after they have passed, in Mick’s case every word is true. He was a genuine Irish cycling legend who gave selflessly so that others could enjoy their racing.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Mick’s family at such a sad time for them.
