Michael Woods tucks into bicarbs (with spoon) during Worlds | Video

Michael Woods of Canada gets stick into the bicarbs - from a plastic dish, using a spoon - on the move during the Worlds road race today

We've seen riders eating some very unusual grub during races - and even some going for a pint during a "coffee" stop - but witnessing a rider at the Worlds eating with a dish and spoon mid-race was a new one for us.

Michael Woods was seen on TV in the early stages of today's road race in Zurich holding a plastic dish in one hand, with a spoon in the other, getting stuck into some nutrition on the go.

There was speculation he was finishing his breakfast - however unlikely that was - though the rider has confirmed he was consuming Maurten Bicarb.

"It was just some Maurten bicarb, it's really effective," Woods told Flobikes in an interview after the race, where he finished 54th. "I like using it but the problem is it only lasts five hours, so I had to have it about an hour into the race."

Maurten says its bicarb "can be used in training and competition for sports that require intermittent or constant intensity near or above anaerobic threshold — cycling, middle-distance running, rowing, swimming, team sports, and combat sports".
