Michael O'Loughlin & Adam Stenson two in-form riders as entries open for National Youth Championships

Adam Stenson (in Ireland kit on left) and Michael O'Loughlin (Ireland kit, right) are two of the form riders heading into the National Youth Championships.

Some 10 years after they hosted the National Time Trial Championships, Slaney Cycling Club will again take centre stage when they host the National Youth Championships in three weeks’ time; August 24th & 25th.

The venue for the feast of underage racing is Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, and the club have been working hard behind the scenes to make the event a success ever since they were awarded the championships late last year.

In fact, it’s over 12 months since the club submitted their application to host the event, which will see a whopping 36 races in total being run off, from U11 to U16.

The championships will consist of a road race, a time trial and a highly-anticipated criterium race held over two days for U11, U12, U13, U14, U15, and U16 boys and girls.

The whole weekend kicks off on Saturday morning with a two kilometre time trial, to take place just outside Enniscorthy on the E01 road. It is one loop with the opening half mainly downhill before climbing thereafter to the finish.

Saturday afternoon sees the various road races take place over a 14-kilometre loop and this is anything but straight forward and will suit those with a love for the hills as there’s hardly a flat metre on the whole course.

Sunday sees the riders take to the town for the criterium on a course that is just over a kilometre in distance and is pan flat.

Last year, the O’Leary’s Stone Kanturk cycling club swept the boards at the championships in Charleville. In total, riders from U11 to U16 claimed a staggering haul of 20 medals and except for the U15 category, they took medals in each category.

To put their massive medal tally into context, the next best team was the Limerick team who took home seven medals.

Amazingly, it’s not the most amount of medals the Kanturk team have departed the biggest race of the year with, as their record stands at a whopping 35.
