Fresh from an end of season campaign which secured an Olympic slot for Ireland in the women’s road race, Mia Griffin has confirmed her departure from the Israel Premier Tech Roland team and a switch to a British team.
It will be a big year for the Kilkenny woman as she is part of the Irish team pursuit set-up that has given itself a great chance of qualifying for the Paris Olympics
“I am going to race for a British Conti team next year,” Griffin told stickybottle. “I’m happy that I found a team for next year. It will be probably announced soon. I just have to officially sign a contract and things like that.”
That signing is expected to happen soon, with the identity of the team to be made public at that point.
The squad will receive a considerable boost by bringing Griffin on board. On October 12th she finished a fine eighth on stage one of the WorldTour-ranked Tour of Chongming Island. Five days later she was a superb third in the Tour of Guangxi one-day race.
The performances not only show that the Kilkenny rider is fully back on track after suffering a concussion in the women’s Paris-Roubaix in April, but also that her potential is better than many may have previously thought.
“It is nice to be back racing and to be back feeling good and fit,” the 24 year old said.
She will look forward to 2024 with determination, while her new squad will relish having a big talent on board.
Stickybottle will bring you details of her new team when we have it.
