Ronan McLaughlin, the former An Post-Chainreation rider and top domestic cyclist over recent seasons, has smashed the Irish Everesting record.

Subject to confirmation, McLaughlin's time has beaten the Irish marker by over two hours and he recorded what would be the 5th fastest time in the world ever for the challenge once it is confirmed.

Donegal man McLaughlin did the challenge today in his home county; riding on Mamore Gap an eye-watering 64 times for a total elevation of 9,200 metres, with 8,848 metres required to count as an Everesting record.

McLaughlin's supporters clocked him at 8hrs 13 minutes, which was well ahead of the current official Irish record of 10hrs 59 mins set by Peter McLean just two weeks ago.

But if McLaughlin's time is confirmed by Hells 500, which created the Everesting concept and keeps the official record, it would be a ride that may put the Irish record out of reach for years.

Alberto Contador set a new world record last week in
Spain with a time of 7hrs 27mins, which beat Lachlan Morton’s time; the EF Pro
Cycling rider having held the record for a matter of weeks with 7hrs 29mins.

International mountain biker Keegan Swanson held the
record before Morton, with 7hrs 40mins. In 4th place in the current all-time
Everesting list is former pro rider Phil Gaimon with 7hrs 52mins.

Once Ireland’s McLaughlin has his time ratified, and
assuming it will be, his time would come next on the world record list for
Everesting, in 5th place.
