McKenna opens 2016 account after leaving peloton gasping

Sean McKenna showed everyone why An Post Chainreaction were right to pursue him throughout the latter half of last year with an awesome performance at the Mick Lally Memorial this afternoon.

The Aquablue man who will link up with the Belgian-based continental team in a few months, sounded a warning to all riders that he’s in mean shape and keen to take off where he left off last year.

This afternoon, McKenna started with the scratch group three minutes behind the A2 men and if that wasn’t enough to close down, the fact the latter were very committed made his achievement all the more outstanding.

Stephen Murphy (iTap) attacked from the A2 group and with him went a Dunboyne CC and an Orwell Wheelers rider.

They were away for over two of the four laps before McKenna came across out of a group of six which had splintered from a larger group of well over a dozen.

Eoin Lynch (Dunboyne CC) and last week’s winner at the Travers Engineering Trader’s Cup David Brody were others to impose themselves, as were Timmy O’Regan (Dunboyne CC) and Daire Feeley (also iTap).

A further shake-up made it six out front - three from iTap, being chased by a group of around 20 and the bunch back the road.

On the last lap, Feeley went clear and McKenna went across  and they pulled out a gap of around 45 seconds on the four chasers behind.

And unwilling to take Feeley to the line - or probably feeling exceptionally strong, McKenna rode solo to the finish, crossing the line with around 30 seconds to spare.

Brody attacked the group he was in and came home alone for third with his teammate Murphy winning the bunch sprint from the large

group that came up behind that remaining three.
