McKenna and Fyffe finally set for An Post debut; face huge test

Angus Fyffe has been training with An Post ChainReaction at altitude recently and will race in its colours for the first time tomorrow in Belgium. It will be a proud moment for the Omagh Wheelers man and his club.

Sean McKenna and Angus Fyffe will make their long-awaited An Post ChainReaction debuts tomorrow in the UCI 1.1-ranked Dwaars Door het Hageland–Aarschot in Belgium.

The pair have been linked up with the squad since August 1st and they will finish out the season there.

Both have been based abroad for a number of weeks now and have competed in many amateur kermesse races and, in McKenna’s case, the Kreiz-Breizh Elites race (2.2) last weekend.

At the start of the year it was stated they would begin racing with the team from early June.

However, that start date has been pushed back very significantly and when they have raced abroad in recent months it has been in their club colours.

They will now be keen to get stuck in, and with the road season in Continental Europe continuing for another three months there is still plenty of racing ahead for them in this campaign.

An Post ChainReaction has named a very strong team for tomorrow's race, which features a smattering of WorldTour teams like Etixx-QuickStep and Lotto-Soudal.

Calvin Watson and Nicolas Vereecken will lead the team and they’ll have the support of 23 year-old Oliver Kent-Spark, rising Dutch star Jasper Bovenhuis, Emiel Wastyn and Jacob Scott.

The only other Irishman in the start-list is reigning U23 road race champion Michael O’Loughlin who is part of Team WIGGINS for the race.

O’Loughlin’s last major outing was the 1.1-ranked GP Cerami recently where he produced an excellent performance to finish in a diminished front group.

All three riders will be vying for a place on the Irish U23 team for the European Championships in Monaco in a little over six weeks.

Talked of as the Strade Bianche of Belgium, the 194.5 kilometre route includes nearly 21 kilometres of unpaved roads of which more than 10 kilometres of gravel and cobblestone sectors are in the last 30 kilometres.  There are also 12 short climbs on the route. NICE!
