McGlinchey on work-life balance and taking break from racing now
It was the winning of Rás Mumhan for Christopher McGlinchey, second, in 2016 when he escaped with Ali Macaulay and Bryan McCrystal on a brutal Easter Saturday stage to Kenmare and though he finished second to the latter he stamped his authority on the race and proved how tough a nut he was to crack. Sadly, he will not be racing this weekend.
The Kerry Group Rás Mumhan is down for decision this weekend but defending champion Christopher McGlinchey has opted to skip the race in favour of a warm-weather training camp in Tenerife.
Riding for Ireland last year he was in the form of his life when he claimed the yellow jersey on the opening day and held it all weekend.
And he kept his form right up until the An Post Rás six weeks later where he also rode for Ireland.
And it’s with the latter race in mind that he’s decided to miss the Easter showdown in Kerry this weekend.
“At the start of the year my goals always been Tour of Ulster and the An Post Rás so defending Rás Mumhan was never really on my radar,” he said.
“My girlfriend and I are heading to Tenerife with a group of friends so I ruled out racing Easter weekend before the start of the season.
“I don't often get time to spend quality time with friends during the season so I jumped at the chance to get away in the sun.
“I am a big believer of cycling-life balance so a weekend away from racing will recharge my batteries for my target events, it's a long season,” he added.

McGlinchey is clearly going well and Sunday’s win in Stamullen underlined his good condition.
“The next six weeks will probably be the busiest block of training and racing in the lead up to the Rás.
“Training has been going great and I’ve been slowly building towards the Rás all year and the form is really starting to fall into place.
“I have some big races pencilled in which should help with my preparation and of course the Tour of Ulster in a few weeks’ time.”
