Ireland’s David McCann has had a frustrating outing at the Olympic Time Trial (TT), finishing down the field in 27th place in what has traditionally been a very strong event for him.

The Irishman relinquished 5:24 to winner Bradley Wiggins (GB), who stormed around the 44km London course in a time of 50:39 to crown what has been an incredible year for him, which has included victory in the Tour de France.

McCann – one of the best TT riders Ireland has ever produced - said afterwards he felt his ride was well below what he is capable of, adding that an injury worry and the stress caused by the last minute arrival of his skinsuit had affected his performance.

“I had a few wee hamstring issues and my skinsuit only actually arrived last night so there was a bit of mental stress,” he told RTE Radio 1’s Roy Willoughby immediately after the race in London this afternoon.

He said that as well as the injury worry and the last minute clothing problem, he felt he “just didn’t click on the day” and was perhaps a little fatigued following Saturday’s 250km road race.

“It wasn’t the worst ride in the world but I know I have better in me on a good day.”

Competing in his third Olympics, he said it had been an enjoyable Games to be part of.

“It’s been fantastic, really fantastic. The atmosphere has been unreal, I’ve really enjoyed it.  It’s great to see all the support out there for cycling.”

McCann told stickybottle earlier in the year that he intended to retire at the end of this season and move into coaching. He reiterated those plans after today’s race, in which he was the only Irish rider.
