The brothers Doherty – Ethan, Aaron and Con – have combined to complete a full-distance Ironman at home in Co Mayo, beating the individual Ironman world record in the process.

The three young brothers from Westport each completed one
leg of the event, in a relay format, to clock a time of 7:33:12.

That beat the world record of 7:35:39,
set by German Jan Frodeno in 2016; competing on his own, of course, rather
than in a relay team with others.

However, as the Dohertys were doing their full Ironman effort at home and for charity they wanted a sporting target and so aimed for the world individual record.

Ethan opened the effort for the brothers, competing the
3.8km in a pool in the garden of their home in Westport.

He swam with the aid of an elastic cord that linked him
to the side of an inflatable pool so that he could swim on the spot; his effort
taking 56 minutes.

Then Aaron stepped up and completed the 180km cycling leg
on his home trainer, in a time of 4hrs 11mins.

Finally, Con – an experienced and successful
international triathlete – took on the 42.4km run.

He completed his marathon distance run on a treadmill in
a time of 2hrs 17mins, including a few toilet breaks and accidentally running
about 700 metres to far.

While Ethan is the youngest of the trio, Con and Aaron
have featured down the years on stickybottle.

Aaron represented Ireland at junior level on the bike and
while he has switched his main focus to triathlon of late he still plans to
race on the road at times.

Con won the Malmö ETU Sprint Triathlon European Cup elite men’s event in Sweden last August and two weeks later was 2nd in the European cup round in Kecskemét, Hungary.

The trio completed their Ironman relay in aid of Pieta House, whose “Darkness into Light” events last weekend were cancelled due to the Covid19 crisis.

At the time of writing the Dohertys had raised just over €8,000 and their fundraiser page was still open to take any further donations.
