Matteo Trentin has reacted angrily to suggestions from within the pro peloton that cyclists and their teams were not consulted or pre-warned about moves to ban the super tuck and so-called ‘breakaway position’ of forearms on handlebars.

Trentin and Philippe Gilbert were the
rider representatives during meetings with the UCI over the winter aimed at addressing
safety issues.

The Italian said over 800 riders were kept informed, via emails and messaging apps, in November and December. He added while riders were sent literature to read about the changes being mooted, only 16 riders had accessed and download the documents.

Against that background, Trentin said
riders could not now complain they had not been kept informed, adding riders
had to make some effort to inform themselves after information is sent to them.

“I’m sorry to say that they need to check their emails and download the new rules. To tweet that they were not informed is easy but emails were sent to over 800 riders and I can tell you that only 16 riders downloaded the information,” he said in a statement to cyclingnews.

“If someone wanted to disagree when the
proposals were made, they had many chances but there was very little
response.

“I don’t know who they want to blame but
it can’t be me, Phil (Gilbert) or the CPA. Not this time. Maybe riders should
spend less time on TikTok and be more proactive when it comes to making their
workplace a safer place.”
