Having ridden at Continental, ProConti and WorldTour level during a prolonged career in the pro peloton Matt Brammeier has retired.
He announced the decision this afternoon. He has been an Aqua Blue Sport rider this season and last.
During his time in the pro game he also rode for An Post-Chainreaction, Dimension Data and Omega Pharma-QuickStep.
Brammeier won the elite Irish road race crown four times. He was also elite TT champion once.
He has taken up a post with British Cycling as lead academy coach for the Great Britain Cycling Team’s men’s endurance programme.
Brammeier was a Team GB international before declaring for Ireland via family connections. He was born and raised in Britain.
He issued a statement today via his Instagram account.
“Highs and lows, success and failures, tears and laughter,” he began in the informal and very modest post.
“I experienced too many good times to mention during my career and met too many amazing people along the way to even start to mention.
“Through nothing but sacrifice and hard work I’d say that I got more than I could have ever imagined from the small amount of talent I have.
“My time as a bike rider has given me so much; my amazing wife, many friends, the chance to visit some amazing parts of the world and experience different cultures.
“I wouldn’t change any of it for the world. Smashing into cars, fighting with cement trucks, winning bike races - some not too much fun at the time - but all of these moments, good and bad, I believe define us and make us who we are.
“Recently I started to realise I’d slowly ran out of competitiveness and lost that drive for bike racing that we all know is needed to even exist in the sport today.
“After what I’d say was a bloody good innings I’ll finally be hanging up the race wheels and moving on to the next chapter and challenge with so much excitement I can’t begin to put into words.
“In the coming weeks I’ll be joining British Cycling as the U23 Academy Endurance Coach and will manage the elite road program.
“I want to thank each and every one of you that played a part in my cycling life these past few years. It’s been a blast!”
