Hands, shoulder, elbow; Mathieu van der Poel used them all to make the space to get through to win the Dutch road race championships.
Video chip of the old block Mathieu van der Poel gets robust
He's clearly been watching videos of his father and Sean Kelly battling hard back in the day.
Mathieu van der Poel wasn't taking no for an answer today when another rider penned him up against the barriers.
The Dutch road race title was on the line and like his father, former top pro Adri van der Poel, would have; junior got robust in the gallop.
Sprinting from a small group, his speed as he pounces from about six riders back as he began his effort is really impressive.
But then Ramon Sinkeldam (Groupama-FDJ) ahead of him drifts to his left and into van der Poel's path.
It pushed the cyclocross champion, and emerging road race star, into the barriers. But van der Poel simply took his hand of the bar to ease his rival a little to the right.
And then to be sure he got through the gap he used his shoulders and then his elbow; then sprinting in to win.
Both the overhead clip and the ground footage should be viewed to appreciate the tiny space he got through for an excellent win.
